“The calligrapher and the dancer have much in common: each must learn choreographed movements; each must maintain compositional order. But once the rules have been observed, each may break free within certain boundaries to express a personal vitality”
Shen Yinmo (沈尹默, 1883 – June 1, 1971) Chinese poet and calligrapher
Go beyond brush, ink and paper and immerse yourself in the world of calligraphy. Discover an art form dating back 3,000 years, while learning and practicing the technique and “choreography” of the six main strokes in order to achieve a harmonious composition with every stroke. This is a wonderful “hands on” opportunity for those unfamiliar with the language to appreciate the elegance and sophistication of fluent brushstrokes.
During your experience with Master Karen, you will explore the importance of harmony through the contrast of dark and light, size of characters and the different styles of calligraphy. You will become aware of how the flow and pressure of every stroke reflects the state of mind of the writer and leads to a work of mindfulness and conscious intention.
You will discover the importance of calligraphy in Chinese culture as an art form, as well as, as the messages it holds. In the process, you will walk away with a different appreciation of calligraphy, in the words of Shen Yinmo, as an art form that visualizes rhythm.
This experience is also suitable for families with children of age nine and beyond.
