“How do we go beyond the obvious and dig deeper into the essence of the city?”
YU’ is a Taoist term meaning to go on a journey. The apostrophe signifies that this journey belongs to you, unfolding with you as you explore your surroundings with new perspectives. Whether you are new to Hong Kong or have been exploring the city for a while, YU’ brings you deeply into the world of Chinese culture through encounters with holders of traditional knowledge, those whom we call Masters (師傅 Sifu) in Cantonese.
YU’ springs from a shared passion for cultural traditions and our belief in their potential to challenge what we thought was certain and give birth to new and unexpected perspectives.
When we first arrived in Hong Kong, we were drawn to the complexity of the city. The multiple layers, the many hidden nooks, the pre-colonial and hyper-modern thrown together into a tight, open space. Soon, we thought, “Where do we start?”, “How do we get into it?”, “How do we go beyond the obvious and dig deeper into the essence of the city?”
Being serial travelers and having lived in numerous places, we both knew from personal experience that an openness to unfamiliar worlds can be a powerful way to discover the unexpected within ourselves. How could we create the magic inspiration that comes from the chance encounters of travel, in our own city? How could we best provide those memorable experiences for those who seek it?

Holders of traditional knowledge
To the outside world, traditional Taoist precepts and Chinese thought may seem to flow to a different tune than the norm. The sense of the individual as part of a larger whole forces us to abandon the modern societal behaviours we have come to accept as the only (or expected?) way.
We want to make traditional culture in Hong Kong accessible, to give you a portal into different experiences through a matser’s (師傅 SI1 FU6) personal invitation into a specific sphere. Masters who will lead you through their personal journey and the stories behind their craft. We have selected practices which complement each other and express different facets of the theory, values and beliefs underlying traditional Chinese Thought.
Traditional Chinese Medicine, Feng Shui, I-Ching, Chinese Astrology, Temple Life and others soon to come. All provide a path of immersion into Hong Kong and Cantonese culture.
“We want to make traditional culture in Hong Kong accessible.”
Yu’ and the city
These practices have also been chosen as a way to give back to the city. Through partnering with local practitioners and recognizing the diversity of local culture, we hope to help preserve this knowledge while offering small, distinctive businesses the opportunity to flourish.
“An openness to unfamiliar worlds can be a powerful way to discover the unexpected within ourselves.”
The Yu’ in You
By inviting you to step into stories that hold the traditions and knowledge deeply ingrained in Hong Kong’s identity, we hope to open up the world we take for granted and give you a glimpse of the other.
It is not simply about ticking off a list of boxes but how a more personal approach of a different culture can meld with your previous understanding of the world and yourself.
Join us on a journey where the elements hidden within can suddenly come alive. We find that new stories often have a peculiar way of merging into our own intimate stories to create fresh chapters or rewrite old paragraphs. There is no fixed path and it is not about where you start, but to start where you are.
Wouldn’t you want to find out?
